We’re back on your radar - are you still game for paving a path to equality with us?

New faces, news tools and one uncomfortable question on AI...

Well hello stranger!

It has been a very long while since we last wrote to you - a year, to be precise! In that time many things have changed, both in our world and the world - so here’s what happened in our world…

1. What (and who) has changed…

  • Sharon has moved on. We agreed her super skills needed a different arena, so she left Mission Equality mid 2024 and is now up to exciting things; do check out what she’s up to. Sharon will remain on our website as a “former guardian”, as will all team members who contribute significantly to our path.

  • I (Lea) went ‘undercover’. Nearly two years supporting a European legal-NGO left our own product development on hold. As that contract wraps up this summer, I’m now rebuilding the team & clarifying our path forward. New faces and intros coming soon!

2. What we’re doing right now…

Our intention is to step up our publishing schedule - both of the podcast and of this newsletter; there’s a lot to talk about currently, wouldn’t you agree?

One of the topics of the moment is, of course, AI. If we believe the scaremongering, most of our jobs will be obsolete in a few years. I found this essay fascinating. It’s long but worth a read - especially the two endings you can choose from.

When it comes to the work we do in this field - of building a path to equality - AI has massive potential. I’d like to think it will help us go further, faster and with greater impact, even with its current flaws and risks…and those are ‘ours’ to manage.

One thing that has not and will not change - especially if you’re leading your own company or organisation - is that capability building* will always be fundamental to your impact and ‘success’.

* Think of a capability as like a function or an area in your company; as in ‘how we do finance’ is the finance capability, or ‘how we do HR, people and culture’ is the HRPC capability, or ‘how we design and build our products’ is the product capability.

The only difference AI will make is figuring out who does what when it comes to each capability since AI can and will increasingly be able to do so many of the tasks we have done/can do.

So the question remains, which parts of each capability in your business can AI do better than you/your team, and which parts can you and your team do better?

AI is going to require this constant review and analysis plus any resulting shifts for quite a while yet; but as we recognise with one of our core values…adaptability and agility are fundamental on the path to equality, so nothing’s changed there then!

I’ll be writing more about some of the themes impacting our own work on the path to equality in the coming weeks, and sharing new episodes of the podcast as we record and release them.

And if you’d like to join me as a guest on the podcast to speak on any of these topics, hit reply and let me know!

Until next time,

Lea and the Mission Equality CIC Team
